On Friday April 13th, researches from in- and outside the Netherlands visited Groningen to join the third conference about sports innovation. Participants were warmly welcomed at Central Station Groningen from their trip towards the North of the Netherlands. We were very happy to welcome more than 110 participants during this day.
The chair of the day Dr. Riemer Vegter opened the day together with Prof. Dr. Koen Lemmink by showing the expertise from researchers in Groningen in the field of sport sciences. In addition, they emphasized the importance of collaboration between various parties that were present at the conference.
After this interview, it was time for the first keynote presentation of the day. Prof. Dr. Bert Otten and Adriaan Helmantel (trainer/coach team Sunweb) took the audience towards the discrepancy between practice and science in cycling. The program continued with two times three parallel sessions until the lunch break. Participants could first choose between parallel sessions about ‘Mental aspects’ , ‘Ice skating’ and ‘Injuries’, followed by a series of parallel sessions in which they could choose between the themes ‘Physical activity, cognition and vitality’, ‘Soccer’ and ‘Various sports’. After the lunchbreak in the afternoon, there were already many other researchers ready to present their work to the audience. In parallel session three and four, the themes ‘Wheelchair using athletes’, ‘Soccer’, ‘Injuries’ and ‘Data analysis’ were present. A total of 37 parallel presentations were offered to the audience during the conference, which were all well attended.
The scientific part of the day ended with a keynote lecture from Prof. Dr. Steven Vos. His presentation ‘Black swans and white ravens’ was about the role of technology in sports over the last decades. Afterwards, there was an awarding for the best presenter of the day. Inge Stoter from the University of Groningen won this price with her talk about a tool for guiding junior speed skaters in 1500m pacing.
The inspiring day ended with some network drinks and the announcement of the 4th Science and Engineering Conference on Sports Innovation next year in Eindhoven!
